Guidelines for submitted manuscripts
The Gutenberg Yearbook publishes articles in German, English, French, Italian and Spanish. We would like to ask the authors to submit their manuscripts digitally (on a data storage medium or via email as an attachment) to the editor in the format described below.
The entry deadline for manuscripts is always the 30 th of September of the preceding year. The Gutenberg Yearbook appears in print annually, the date of publication coincides with the general meeting of members of the Gutenberg Society in June.
1. Guidelines for the format of manuscripts
The standardized layout and typographical concept of the Gutenberg Yearbook are implemented by a book designer. Therefore, we ask the authors not to undertake any kind of typesetting and not to diverge from the guidelines given below. Otherwise, much editorial processing must be carried out, which leads to additional costs in the publication and production of the yearbook.
1.1. Front matter
First and last name of author
Main title
Subtitle
(aligned left, without punctuation, paragraphing or italics, small capitals etc.)
1.2. Paragraphs, Page Imposition, Indents
Please do not add automatic page numbers, headlines or footers. The text should be a continuous text, without vertical spacing (exception: new paragraphs) and without manual hyphenation (whole word wraparound).
Please do not indent paragraphs!
Please do not use center justification!
Never use small capitals and never use letter spacing!
Please use only one space between words, even in front of a new sentence. Punctuation marks (:?!) should not be separated from the preceding word!
Please do not provide charts and diagrams in digital form, but rather as a legible template. Please do not use frames or other framing devices.
1.3. Terms to be highlighted
Please mark terms to be highlighted by italicizing them.
1.4. Special characters
If you need to make use of special characters (or accented letters of the Latin alphabet or non-Latin alphabets) that are not part of the ASCI-keyboard layout, please make note of this on the cover of the manuscript. Please mark the places in question in the manuscript by using two square brackets [[?]].
1.5. Citations
Do not indent citations or change the font size. Mark omissions by parentheses (...) – please do not use square or angle brackets. Please pay attention to whether the punctuation is part of the citation or not.
Quotation marks used for English, French, Spanish and Italian:
“printed for the first time”
«pointe de flèche»
«La actividad de Hernando de París como impresor»
«la stampa è a due colori, rosso e nero»
1.6. Titles of books, articles or journals, etc. within the text
Please mark titles of books, articles, journals, etc. by italicization.
1.7. Dates
Please use these formats for dates:
1952;
25./26.11.1952;
1952–1953.
2. Footnotes within the text
Please mark the numbers of footnotes by superscript.
Please do not use automatic footnote programs; the footnotes will be unified with the text during the production phase. Please send us the footnotes as a separate file or as an appendix.
2.1. Footnotes
Please begin the footnotes with the number of the footnote, without parentheses or punctuation, in the same line as the text of the footnote. Please mark the end of every footnote with a period.

3. Captions
Please insert captions without a period at the end.
Example: Image 1 The Butler MS central fold p. 343 with six pinpoints circled
4. Images
Please send us your suggestions for images when you submit your manuscript. The original must be of high quality, at least 13 x 18 cm, high gloss finish: either photo slides, black-and-white photos or color photos.
Attention: The conversion of color images into black-and-white images causes a massive loss of contrast and thus should be avoided at all costs.
The images will be given a standardized format by our book designer.
For more information on digitalized photos, see below.
5. Manuscripts in digital form
5Providing that you decide to send us your manuscript on a data storage medium or via email, please adhere to the following guidelines:
The prerequisite for the use of your data is that the text was processed either on a DOS or Apple operating system. Please indicate which text processing program and operating system you worked with. If possible, send us two DOS-files, with the text saved once in the original format of your text processing program and once in Rich Text Format (RTF).
Please do not save images in the text files, but separately. Indicate the position in the text at which you would like to insert the image as follows: Text [[Image 1]].
Please number all images throughout and provide a print-out with all of your images, including their respective number and caption.
In addition to the digital form of your manuscript, please supply us with an identical printed version as well.
5.1 Digitalized Photos
If you choose to send us your images as files, please note the following:
The resolution must be at least 300dpi. The standard size should be 12 cm wide and 8 cm tall.
Approximate size of a color photo (CMYK): 5.1 MB
Black-and-white: 1.3 MB
Please do not compress the image files. This always leads to a loss of quality that may not be visible on the screen, but will lead to problems during the printing process. If your files are much smaller than the approximate size given above, then something (resolution, size) is not correct.
Preferred formats: TIFF or Photoshop EPS.
Please do not convert color images into black-and-white images. Send us the color images. Originals that have a raster (photos or other images that you have scanned from books, magazines, etc.) can contain Moiré-effects which are not visible on screen. In this case, please send us the original.
Fees
The authors are responsible for the adduction of the rights to the images. The fees resulting can be taken over by the Gutenberg Society with prior consultation.
We thank you in advance for your cooperation. If you have any questions, it is our pleasure to answer them anytime.
