All old and new friends of the Gutenberg Society as well as of the popular Jour Fixe format are cordially invited to an exciting discussion round in a spectacular Mainz cultural ambience - physical well-being will be provided.
Topic: Women printers 500 years ago - New research findings
Speaker: Dr. Saskia Limbach
Since Gutenberg's invention, women have been involved in letterpress printing with movable type. Often they helped as wives, sisters and daughters in the family business. However, since the 15th century there were also some widows who continued the printing business independently and successfully after the death of their husband. In recent years, historians have increasingly focused on the role of women in European printing companies and have gained fascinating new insights.
In her lecture, Dr. Limbach will present us with the latest results for the German as well as the French, English and Dutch language area and show, using the example of the Tübingen printer Magdalena Morhart, which challenges and resistance had to be overcome.
Afterwards, the small, beloved wine tasting will take place again. Registration is requested at email@example.com or by phone at 06131-226420.
