1983 Gerrit Willem Ovink

Professor of History and Asthetics of Printing Art / Amsterdam, The Netherlands

The Dutchman Geritt Willem Ovink, born in 1912 and deceased in 1984, was the laudator of the second Gutenberg Prize winner Henri Friedlaender. He dedicated his dissertation "Legibility" to the readability of modern pamphlets. According to Friedlaender, who also gave his laudatory speech, Ovink ventured with the re-casting of old writings of the 19th century, a "typographic revolution". In 1983, the typographer received the Gutenberg Prize from the City of Mainz and the International Gutenberg Society for the re-casting of ancient writings (lost advertisements of the 19th century).
