We cordially invite you again to the student event series "Longdrinks". On Thursday, 12 May 2022, we will discuss the topic "Unconscious needs of reading – how reading motives influence our book purchase" in a relaxed round in the Mayence Quarter from 6 pm.
Topic: Reading motives – why do people read books? What unconscious needs influence book buying?
In 2018, the Börsenverein des Deutschen Buchhandels published the study "Buchkäufer – quo vadis". In it, the Börsenverein, together with the Gesellschaft für Konsumforschung (GfK) and a group of industry representatives, examined buying behaviour in order to understand why, for many years, sales in the book industry have remained stable but the number of book buyers continues to decline. They found that lack of direction and lack of time are the most common reasons for the exodus from the book market.
To address this problem, an industry taskforce was launched by the Börsenverein's board in 2019. This taskforce used interviews and surveys to analyse the motives for buying books and derived ten "reading motives" from them, which are to serve as a new standard for the book industry in the German-speaking world. They were included as an additional category in the Verzeichnis Lieferbarer Bücher (VLB). The aim of the reading motifs is, on one hand, to address the subconscious needs of customers and, on the other hand, to help them find their way around bookshops more easily. This way, the joy and pleasure of reading and books should be maintained.
But how is a book assigned to a specific reading motif? And where do we encounter these reading motifs when buying books? We would like to discuss these and other exciting questions about book buying with you and look forward to talking with you!
The event will be moderated by the Gutenberg Society interns Malin Reinhard and Florentine Wörner.
