The student event series "Longdrinks at the Baron" of the International Gutenberg Society unfortunately cannot take place at the Baron this month as usual. However, we do not want to cancel it, but instead offer all interested parties a digital discussion round. So: grab your first choice drink and make yourself comfortable!
Topic: "Interactive children's books - innovative invention or the loss of the classic book?
Interactive books, enhanced or enriched ebooks... there are many terms for the "new" books that are supposed to revolutionize reading. Through links and videos, mini-games and animations, the texts are expanded and give the reader the opportunity to bring the story to life in more ways than just their own creativity. These formats are currently very popular in the children's literature sector.
In 2012, a study by Stiftung Lesen revealed the potential for children and parents in the field of digital reading. At first glance, children seem to be more interested in picture book apps than in conventional print versions. One in seven of the families surveyed were already using children's/picture book apps. Tip Toi, reviewable children's books and personalized stories are also very popular.
Nevertheless, the topic continues to generate discussions among experts and professionals. Critical questions about the aesthetics, handling and promotion through digital reading should be asked again. What happens when children no longer learn to focus on pure text? What happens when they hardly know physical books anymore? What are the advantages and disadvantages of digitization?
